“Doodler” is the epitome of a one man man show. John Fisher wrote the script, directed himself, runs the lights and the concession stands, plays every character, and even breaks the fourth wall to interact with the audience as himself.

This would be shockingly self-indulgent, if one didn’t consider the origins of this production during the COVID epidemic, when Fisher presented it as a ZOOM performance and naturally had to manage everything on his own. Rather than an exercise in egotism, it was an attempt to find a solution to a unique challenge. It worked so well, that Fisher decided it could be recreated as a live theatrical performance. He was right.

“Doodler” is based on real events. Back in the 1970s, a serial killer was active in the gay community. There was an unidentified suspect who was known to attract his victims by doodling their portrait and using it as a calling card to make their acquaintance and lure them to their deaths. It is horrifying to think about. The case was never solved.

From this premise Fischer creates the character of a young man in his 20s, just coming out in the Castro, who sets out to solve the crime and stop the killings. Fisher uses this premise to create a myriad of Castro characters, from innocent young men to aging drag queens, to closeted cops, and more. It is a great opportunity to display his well-known penchant for perfectionism as he carefully etches characters who range from charming to creepy, hilarious to touching, and points in between.

It is enough to make an entertaining night out; but rather like watching a highly skilled juggler. It is very impressive, very enjoyable, and very forgettable once it is over.

Fisher is capable of much more (as evidenced by his direction of Rhinocerus’s recent spectacular revival of “Cabaret”). But “Doodler” is certainly  worth the price of a ticket.

“Doodler” plays at Theatre Rhinocerus through March 2, 2025. For further information click here.
