After a development period of five years, San Francisco based ensemble inkBoat will premiere their unique and experimental dance performance, “Clouds from a Crumbling Giant” at the 2026 San Francisco International Arts Festival from April 30 through May 3.
With director Shinichi Iova-Koga leading the production in collaboration with the company, inkBoat brings multiple yet complementary influences that tell a tale of human incarnations, change, and cycles. The piece is conveyed through various voices coming from Noh Theater, Corporeal Mime, Butoh Dance, Physical Theater, accompanied by orchestrations evoking feelings of unease and uncertainty as well as nostalgia and grandeur.
Amidst preparations, I was able to chat with Shinichi about his thoughts on “Clouds.” Representative of the performance, Shinichi shares that they don’t focus on finding people to fill a specific role, but instead build around the varying backgrounds of the artists involved.
“It’s less about deciding these forms and more about having been involved with the people in these forms,” he said. “It’s simply [that] I am interested in this collaborator, and it just so happens they’re doing Noh Theater or Corporeal Mime.”
With some contemplation, when asked to describe the performance in one word, Shinichi settled on polyphony, the combination of individual melodies harmonizing with each other. Considering the elements that make up the performance, it becomes a common theme throughout our conversation and fittingly encapsulates how different disciplines can come together and create a transformative experience.
Shinichi says, “Polyphony I feel is a coming together of many. Thematically, we’re dealing with cycles in terms of life and death, arising and falling. These concepts apply to both the universe and personal lives.”
Similarly, breaking down the title of “Clouds,” he speaks of the passing generations, cycles, and the atmosphere surrounding these changes.
When I shared my thoughts on the title, personally sensing melancholy and reminiscence, it demonstrates the relatedness of Clouds and how everyone will have their own unique experience.
Shinichi affirmed that, “However you read it is correct for you. [Even what I think about the title] changes over time…at different points in terms of how I conceive or think of the piece. Someone’s own filters allow them to read it in their own way.”
A multifaceted work that carries deep thoughtfulness, Clouds will make audiences reflect on the perception of the cycles and changes in their own lives. Whether they’re just as shining or turbulent is up to the viewer but, nevertheless, the day will pass and a new one will come.
