Montreal’s Cirquantique is making its very first international tour to come to San Francisco for the San Francisco International Arts Festival.
Surely they have chosen the right place, bringing a style of performance that San Francisco loves! After all, our fair city is home to our very own much beloved Edwardian Ball, and Kit Robichard’s Misfit Cabaret, not to mention The Speakeasy.
All of which is to say that this Canadian troupe should fit into our city as easily as Cinderella’s elegant foot into the famous glass slipper.
The performers of Cirquantique are proud of their busker origins, many having developed their skills performing on the street. They describe their show as immersive theatre which combines circus, burlesque, and live music developed in the famed underground circus scene of their home city. They are a woman-led ensemble, featuring four artists with varying areas of expertise.
Mélodie Couture creates magic with hula hoops (sometimes performing on stilts) and on the static trapeze. Daïna Michaud performs aerial dance, acrobatics, and burlesque. Sara Deull is an acrobat and aerialist. Priscilla Dellazizzo came to the arts of the circus along the unusual road of classical ballet, having spent 10 years attending prestigious schools such as the National Ballet School and École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec. With Cirquantique, she performs as an aerialist and contortionist on the flying trapeze. Délphine Cezard is a specialist with aerial ropes.
With “Bang! Bang!” the company explores the dark world of prohibiition era Quebec, in what they describe as “a night of transgression and rebelling against false temperance—in a parallel universe where speakeasies proliferate, bootlegging is rampant and the black market rules.”
Audiences who attend “Bang! Bang!” are encouraged to dress up appropriately. The company treats each performance like a party. “The idea,” they say, “is to create a festive ambiance for the audience as well as the artists.”
Sounds like fun, no?
