“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is a big rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza with a live band on stage, complex choreography, and deep pockets of excitement. Performed well, it is big enough to satisfy even in a theatre the size of The Orpheum or The Golden Gate.
This is to say that to see “Hedwig” in the tiny confines of NCTC is amazing. Especially given that the energy harnessed at NCTC could easily fill the huge houses I just mentioned. Basically, this production is lightning in a bottle, and my review, in summary, is: “Don’t miss it!!!”
But one is expected to say a bit more, and I will.
I saw Samuel del Rosario in the role of Hedwig, and he was extraordinary. Based on the program, I do not get the impression that he habitually performs drag as an art form, but his work here is certainly in a league with the best drag queens. His singing is thrilling, his emotional range is gargantuan, his dancing is ecstatic and moving, and his overall impression leaves us breathless. He will make you care, make you think, make you gasp, and send you home satisfied. For the run of the show, some nights del Rosario will play Yitzhak and trixxie carr will play Hedwig. On other nights, they will switch off. I have no doubt that this production will thrill with either performer playing Hedwig.
The night I attended, the role of Yitzhak was performed by understudy Courtney Merrell. She brought plenty of musical comedy and rock ‘n’ roll cred to the stage, and held her own with del Rosario.
Along with all that, the design team has packed a lot of wallop into a small space. The show is visually over-the-top, which is exactly what it needs.
“Hedwig” is THE transgender punk rock ‘n’ roll musical for the ages. There is nothing like it. Fans will not be disappointed. Those lucky enough to meet Hedwig for the first time will find the real thing in this fine production.
First rate!!!
